Iran will stop 40% of the world's oil trade by shutting down the Strait of Hormuz, Iran
Tehran Iran has threatened to close the Strait of Hormuz if the US imposes sanctions. Iran has threatened after US sanctions imposed that if economic and trade sanctions were imposed on Iran, Iran would stop 40% of the world's oil trade by closing the Strait of Hormuz.
The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow coastline along the Iranian coast, on the other side of the United Arab Emirates and the coast of Oman, and 40% of the world's oil goes through this route all over the world. According to a 2007 report, 1.2 million barrels of oil goes into the world on this route daily. In addition, 20% of the world's trade is through this route. The United States had imposed sanctions on Iran, saying that all countries should cease their trade with Iran and that the ban would be implemented from May 2, but now Iran has threatened the United States that if it does, Harms will shut down 40% of the world's oil trade, as well as 20% of the rest of the world's trade.
The Iranian Foreign Office has warned the United States to lift all sanctions imposed on Iran or else Iran will block all freight routes to India, China, Japan and South Korea. If this happens then trade around the world will be affected as India, China, Japan and South Korea make goods from the same route and send them to the whole world.
